Do you remember Majestic? It was the game played in real time/real life. I remember trying the trial and wanted to start the playing, but it was suspended around the Sept 11 attacks and then cancelled.
I think it was ahead of it's time and with the technology now (everyone is wired/facebook/twitter), I think it's time for another run at a similar game. What do you think?
You know, this topic seems to come up... I think the real challenge is how you make it asynchronous. I played Majestic for a bit... but when you would get the phone calls and such, you weren't always in a mode that you could actually respond to it... so I found it more annoying... and a bit cheesy because I am not much of a roll player.
I think ARGs have filled the space for people who really like that bleeding over of game and life experiences. Not sure I would play Majestic 2.0...
But there is something to designing a meta game around all these social networks... something that makes sense, yet draws upon their popularity for the game mechanics.
Yeah, with all the social networks, it's totally the right time to bring it back - Majestic got a little bit "too" personal, but now I think we're TOTALLY ready.
Yeah as ChangeAgent pointed out ARGs are kind of like free majestic 2.0. It would be interesting for a company to do a real world MMO and have lots of backstory and events happening all around the social network, and let you involve youself as much as you like. But it really takes a strong game first, for folks to want to participate in the Meta game. So its a chicken and egg thing in my mind.
I actually played the original one for a while. Loved the concept. And I think you're correct, the time is right for someone to try again. On the other hand, I'm afraid it will suck what little time I have in my life away :)
That's when you hide in aisle 12, out of earshot of anyone, then buy a whole bunch of weird hardware, run out of the store and pretend you're James Bond. How is that not fun? :P
